Caring Tips for Shag Rugs
Shag rugs are classy, stylish, luxurious & overtly attractive; because of all these things these rugs are back in trend & are one of the most sought after rugs for a living room. Shag rugs are comfortable, warm & cushion eras compared to thin carpets. The rugs easily add vogue to any dull interior thereby always being highly in demand, but caring for these rugs & keeping them clean is a tedious task.
The easiest & safest care tip is to prevent the accumulation of dirt &to avoid any kind of accidental spillage. To prevent your shag rug from getting dirty or stained; keep your pets, children & shoes out of your living room or any room where you have placed this rug.
Though cleaning shag rugs is difficult but it isn’t impossible, with proper care & frequent cleaning you can ensure the longevity of your living room rugs. Try these easy tips to maintain a cleaner shag rug:
Removing the trapped dirt
Removing the trapped dirt is an easy way of cleaning your shag rug without causing any damage to it. Flip your rug with the backside facing upwards & hang it on a railing, then beat it with a stick or mop handle to loosen the accumulated dirt, dust & grit from the shag threads.
Let it sunbathe
Once in a while take out your shag rug in the sun & let it stay there for an hour or two. The sunrays kill the bacteria, mites & moulds that settle down in the long threads.
#Note: Don’t leave the rug in the sun for a longer period as the direct sunlight might fade the colours of your rug.
Periodic vacuuming
Shag rugs need periodic vacuuming depending on their usage & traffic load, for instance if the rug is placed in the living room or kids’ room where the traffic load is high then it needs vacuuming on a daily or biweekly basis. If the rug is placed in a less frequented room then it must be vacuumed once a month.
Though regular vacuuming is beneficial but one must be extremely careful while vacuuming shag rugs. Never use a vacuum cleaners beater brush or power brush for cleaning your shag rug, by doing so you can irreversibly damage the rug.
Use an attachment wherein you can control the suction power so as to facilitate proper suction of dust without causing any damage to the rug. Vacuum the backside of the rug too in order to remove the hidden dirt.
Soak up the spill immediately
In case of an accidental spill soak up the spill immediately with a paper towel or a light coloured rag. Avoid using a coloured cloth to prevent the transfer of colour from the rag to rug.
Professional cleaning
Nothing cleans your rug better than professionals. Once every 2-3 years, get your shag rug professionally cleaned. Many forums advice steam cleaning & dry/wet shampooing of shag rugs at home but we strictly recommend taking professional help for these things. As shag rugs absorb water for a longer period because of their high pile as compared to thin carpets, imperfect steam cleaning or shampooing at home might damage the rug.
